At Embla, we believe that the key to lasting weight loss is adopting healthier habits that you can stick to. We view weight loss medication as a temporary aid to jumpstart this process and make adopting new lifestyles easier. Because of this, our approach blends personal one-on-one health guidance from our expert team with appetite-reducing medication, creating the optimal conditions for sustainable weight loss.
Our holistic weight loss program stands out by integrating medical treatment with highly personalized health guidance. This dual approach addresses both the physical and mental aspects of weight loss, setting us apart from traditional programs—especially other medical ones—that typically focus only on the physical aspect. Moreover, the support we offer is in a class of its own in terms of accessibility and interdisciplinary approach. Our team consists of health coach, doctors, nurses, nutrition experts, and even psychologists, all accessible through our free app.
The Embla program provides round-the-clock access to nurses and doctors, personalised guidance from a dedicated health coach available every day via chat and biweekly video calls, and a customised weight loss experience via an user-friendly app with tracking tools, community access, and expert-written health content. We also provide weight loss medication for those who want it, all within a transparent pricing model with no hidden fees and consistent costs, even if medication dosages change
Embla creates a uniquely supportive environment for your weight loss journey by offering a dedicated expert weight loss team and the assistance of weight loss medication. This approach ensures you're never alone, and small, achievable changes are enough to reach your goals. On top of this, your personal health coach is available every day via chat and video calls to provide health guidance, motivation, or simply lend an ear, supporting you from start to finish. This means you can achieve lasting weight loss without food noise, restrictions or judgment.
Embla helps you lose weight by combining the kickstart effect of weight loss medication, which reduces your calorie intake, with the personalised support of a health coach. The medication effectively initiates your weight loss by controlling your calorie consumption. Meanwhile, your coach works closely with you to tackle the root causes of you having overweight. They guide you in improving your food choices, increasing daily physical activity, and transforming your relationship with food into a positive one. This dual approach ensures both immediate and long-term support in your weight loss journey.
Our experience, backed by studies, shows that effective results can be achieved with lower medication doses when combined with healthier lifestyle changes. We prioritise the lowest effective dose for our members to minimise side effects, and only consider increasing it if necessary for further progress.
Our program is tailored to provide meaningful and sustainable weight loss results. On average Embla members lose around 15% of their body weight after staying with us for 6 months. These results may vary depending on various factors. Our health team will give you a clear overview of the factors that influence your expected weight loss.
Medical weight loss includes the use of GLP-1a medications like Wegovy® that mimic the body's own satiety hormone. This makes you feel full faster, helping you eat less and lose weight as a natural consequence.
To support your weight loss journey and ease lifestyle changes, we offer the option to prescribe GLP-1a medications like Wegovy. This approved weight loss medication effectively reduces your appetite, delivering faster results for motivation and helping you focus on changing habits rather than food.
Wegovy® is a GLP-1a medication developed by Novo Nordisk. It contains Semaglutide, the same ingredient found in Ozempic®, a diabetes drug. Wegovy works by helping you feel less hungry and more full, leading you to eat less and lose weight.
GLP-1a medications promote weight loss by slowing stomach emptying, making you feel full longer, and reducing appetite by acting on the brain's hunger centers.
It's difficult to lose weight and maintain weight loss with diet and exercise alone. Obesity is a complex disease with many contributing factors, including genetics, environment, and behaviour. Appetite-reducing medication can help individuals reduce their food intake, while freeing up mental energy to focus on forming new, healthier ways of living.
GLP-1a medications like Wegovy® are approved weight loss medications with mild side effects for some people. These can include nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation. However, these usually subside within a few weeks of starting the medication.
It’s common to see people lose an average of 5% of their body weight after 12 weeks of using weight loss medication. At Embla, we see an average weight loss of around 15% in our members during the first 6 months. On average, they lose 1kg per week.
20-40% of people may experience side effects like nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation, depending on the medication. These are usually temporary. Our healthcare team can adjust dosages or diets to help manage them. Most Embla members have no side effects, and our staff is available 24/7 for guidance.
We suggest committing to a weight loss plan for 8-12 months for continuous progress.
Weight loss medication isn't a permanent solution but a supportive tool in your weight loss journey. Long-term success relies on lifestyle changes. The medication boosts initial weight loss and can be used for several months. At Embla, we emphasise health mentoring and providing mental tools to tackle weight loss challenges.
Our members typically stay with us for about 8-12 months or until they reach their desired BMI. If you have mobility-limiting illnesses, this might affect the duration of the treatment.
Research indicates that weight loss medication like Wegovy® is effective for individuals with a BMI over 30. At Embla, we've documented that our members' average weight loss is between 15 - 20% after 8 months.
The GLP-1a medications we prescribe to our members are suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more if you have a weight-related health condition like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.
Yes, you will receive your medication from Embla. Our doctors will prescribe your medication, which will be delivered directly to you via our pharmacy partner.
For Wegovy®, the most common form of GLP-1a medication, you take it by administering it to yourself via a small injection with a pen, usually once a week. Other variations of the medication require daily injections.
We have received several inquiries about why we do not routinely take blood tests after starting Wegovy treatment.
Currently, there are no general recommendations for blood tests — such as checking liver values — in connection with Wegovy treatment, unless the patient has known liver problems or other specific disorders.
The primary risks of weight loss medication affecting the liver are gallstones and pancreatitis, but blood tests are only necessary if symptoms arise. Blood tests cannot be used to predict whether you as a patient will develop these diseases.
In accordance with good clinical practice, the purpose of any examination, including blood tests, should be carefully considered before it is performed. Since routine blood tests in connection with Wegovy treatment have no direct consequences for the course of treatment, we do not consider them necessary. This is in line with the current guidelines in the field.
Patients who are already receiving other medications that require regular blood tests and monitoring (such as medication for high blood pressure) should follow their existing monitoring plan.
We hope this is a satisfactory answer and are always available for further questions
There are no general recommendations on needing to pause weight loss medication before surgery under general aaesthesia
However, as a precaution, based on the fact that food stays longer in the stomach when you are on weight loss medication, we still recommend that you pause your weight loss medication for 3 weeks before undergoing surgery with general anesthesia. It is important that the stomach is completely empty before you are anesthetized, as this reduces the risk of anything from the stomach entering the airways before, during, and after the operation.*
However, some departments may recommend something different. Therefore, it is always important that you consult with the staff at the department where you will be operated. You can usually do this during the pre-surgery consultation (also called the preoperative assessment).
