When you live in an overweight body, you often are met with shame and guilt for your size, and often told that you ‘just have to eat less and move more’. At Embla, we know that there are so many factors for increasing weight and it’s much more complex than it’s assumed! And it is not to do with the individual’s own fault that their weight is so high.

We do not believe that the path to a healthier life with positive well-being is through a quick fix or rigid rules, but rather through working with the habits, thoughts and feelings you have around eating, the food itself and movement. You are more than your weight. The number on the scale does not define you.

That’s why we offer a tailored health program for those who are severely overweight and want to do something positive to improve their weight in the long-term.

Why choose a course at Embla?

The causes of obesity are multifactorial, and research does not yet have a full understanding of why we become overweight. However, we do know that people living with excess weight have often had poor and limited opportunities to lose and maintain weight loss in the long term. The judgemental eyes of the outside world, feeling unhappy within yourself, your body, pain and illnesses/injuries, or a feeling of being wrongly led - many times - into a vicious cycle of rigid dieting and then into periods of stopping the diet, but all ‘good’ habits are dropped and the weight you lost comes back and continues to increase. New medical support and knowledge about what happens behaviourally and psychologically when we try to change habits or lose weight have paved the way for Embla’s tailored health program to support sustainable behaviour change and weight loss, as an alternative to the endless cycle of diets.

At Embla, we start from where you currently are, and listen to where you want to go in relation to your health. Whether that goal is weight loss, a more positive body image or improving your relationship with food and movement, we are here to help you on your way to reaching these goals using methods that give you self-love and an improved, flexible relationship with your weight and food.

We can help you on your way to reach a stable weight that you feel comfortable with, and that works for your body too. We give you the tools to understand and change your habits, get in tune with your hunger and sense of fullness, clear your mind of dieting thoughts and improve your relationship with food and movement for the long term.

Many who have tried to lose weight many times have often lost touch with their understanding and feeling of hunger and satiety, and overall confidence in themselves. When you start to lose weight, your body reacts by increasing your appetite. This increase in hunger can lead to fear and a sense of loss of control, which you may react to in a negative way. You may have tried things such as fasting to suppress your hunger and help with losing weight, only to unconsciously eat more to feel less hungry, especially during fasting hours.

 Medication with GLP-1 molecules mimics the hormones in your own body that are released when you eat and make you feel full. For some, the medication can help to take away that stress and give them a chance to work on getting back in tune with their hunger cues and build trust in their sensations as they lose weight. The medication has shown great potential to help people lose weight in a safe and appropriate way, without starvation or rigid rules. This allows us to work on the positive effects of the medication to maintain weight loss for the long term. This is an area that our healthcare team at Embla are highly experienced in and dedicated to working on with you. Through working with one of our coaches, you work on your habits, feelings and behaviour connected to food and movement, and we work with you to build a solid foundation to maintain your weight loss and have a stable weight going forward.

Community

We know from research that feeling like you are part of a community is an important feeling linked to motivation and working toward the changes you want to make for yourself. Within the Embla app, you always have access to your own health team, consisting of a coach, doctor and nurse, who are ready to help and guide you when motivation drops or support is needed. In the Embla community tab, you can get in touch with other members who are in the same boat, and share your successes and challenges along the way, creating an extra channel of support as you work hard toward reaching your goals and taking care of yourself and your health.
